Chapter Meeting - January 19, 2008

The meeting was held at the Vista Hills Country Club and proceedings began at 12:00 p.m. (noon).  After lunch was consumed, the chapter president, Clarence Curl, brought the meeting to order.  President Curl turned the floor over to Compatriot Bill Luckey.  Bill noted the current article in the El Paso Times concerning the internment and future ceremony of his gateway ancestor, Michael Ehler.  The chapter agreed on a ceremony date of February 22, 2008) and promised to support Compatriot Luckey by all means.  Next, Compatriot Boyd Tate was awarded the Vietnam Service Medal by President Curl and District 1 Vice-President Col. Bill Holcombe (Ret.).  District 1 Vice-President Col. Holcombe (Ret.) also acknowledged Past-President Ralph Seitsinger for his service during WWII and advised that his medal was ordered.  President Curl thanked Chapter Vice-President Dr. Ron Livermore for developing and managing the chapter’s website.  Immediately following the new business of the chapter, District 1 Vice-President Col. Bill Holcombe (Ret.) introduced the speaker for the afternoon, the honorable Congressman Joe Pickett.  Congressman Pickett began his speech by noting that his mother was a member of the DAR.  After suggesting that his joining the chapter would be difficult, due to a hard-to-locate birth certificate, he addressed the concerns of the chapter.  The first issue he addressed was possible toll roads and new road construction in the Northeast.  After a very detailed description of the issues, he laid out his plans for addressing these concerns.  He concluded his speech by explaining the difficulties and challenges of being a congressmen from El Paso and the problems he foresees with local and state politics.  President Curl concluded the meeting by noting the the March meeting was cancelled, due to the TXSSAR Conference in Arlinton, Texas on March 27-30, 2008.
